When a Standard Photo Print Just Won’t Fit
Have you ever bought a beautiful photo frame because you loved the design, only to discover afterwards that the opening isn’t a standard photo size?
It happens more often than you might think.
Frames purchased abroad, unusual-shaped frames, vintage frames, handmade frames and decorative frames can all have dimensions that don’t match the standard photo print sizes you normally find online or in shops. You may have the perfect photograph to put inside it, but finding a print that actually fits can be another matter entirely.
That’s where my Photo Editing Services and Custom Print Sizes can help.
The Frame Comes First
Recently, I was asked to produce a photograph for a frame that had been purchased abroad.
The frame itself was perfect. The problem was that the space for the photograph wasn’t a standard size.
Rather than trying to find a photograph that would fit the frame, we worked the other way around: we started with the photograph and created the finished print specifically for the frame.
This meant editing the photograph, preparing it to the correct proportions and then printing and carefully cutting it to the exact dimensions required.
The result was a photograph that fitted the frame perfectly.
More Than Just Printing a Photograph
This is where my photo editing experience becomes particularly useful.
Before printing the image, I was able to make some adjustments to ensure the photograph looked its best in its new format.
The image was:
- Colour corrected to improve the overall appearance
- Carefully prepared for the unusual dimensions of the frame
- Edited to remove distracting elements from the background
- Adjusted and cropped to make the composition work within the available space
- Printed to the exact size required
- Carefully trimmed to fit the frame
So rather than simply taking an existing photograph and putting it through a printer, the entire image was prepared specifically for its final destination.
That is an important distinction.
What If Your Frame Isn’t a Standard Size?
Standard photo sizes are convenient, but they don’t work for every situation.
You might have a frame that measures something like 7 × 11 inches, 13 × 18 cm, or another completely unusual dimension.
You might even have a frame where the photograph needs to be slightly smaller than the overall frame because of the way the image sits behind the mount.
Instead of cutting a standard print and hoping it works, I can create the artwork to the exact dimensions you need.
This can be particularly useful for:
- Frames purchased overseas
- Vintage and antique frames
- Handmade or unusual frames
- Bespoke picture frames
- Decorative photo frames
- Small frames for special photographs
- Memorial or keepsake frames
- Unusual mounts and apertures
- Personal gifts and family photographs
It Doesn’t Have to Be a Frame
The same principle can be used for much smaller items too.
Perhaps you have a photograph that needs to fit inside a locket, jewellery pendant, miniature frame or another keepsake.
These can require photographs to be produced at very specific dimensions, sometimes only a few millimetres across.
The photograph may also need to be carefully cropped so that the important part of the image remains visible once it has been reduced.
This is another situation where simply ordering a standard print isn’t necessarily the best solution.
I can prepare the photograph specifically for the item it is going into.
What About a Photograph That Isn’t Quite Right?
Sometimes the problem isn’t the size of the frame. It’s the photograph itself.
Perhaps you’ve found the perfect photograph, but there’s someone in the background you’d rather not have there.
Maybe there’s a distracting object, poor lighting, unwanted clutter or colours that don’t look quite right.
This is where my Photo Editing Services can make a difference.
I can edit and prepare the image before it is printed, including colour correction, removing unwanted distractions, improving the composition and making other adjustments where appropriate.
The aim isn’t simply to make the photograph fit.
It’s to make sure the photograph looks right before it goes into the frame.
From Digital Photograph to Finished Print
One of the advantages of combining photo editing and printing is that I can look at the whole process rather than treating the photograph and the print as two completely separate jobs.
The process can be as simple as:
Your photograph → Photo editing → Correct dimensions → Print → Trim → Ready for your frame
This means you don’t have to worry about trying to resize the image yourself, finding a print service that offers an unusual dimension or attempting to cut the photograph accurately at home.
I can take care of the preparation and produce the finished print to your requirements.
Have You Bought the Frame Already?
If you’ve already bought a frame and then realised that you can’t find a photograph print to fit it, don’t assume you’ve wasted your money.
Send me the dimensions of the opening, along with the photograph you’d like to use, and I can look at what is possible.
If the photograph needs editing as well, I can take care of that before producing the final print.
Sometimes the unusual frame is actually the starting point for creating something completely bespoke.
